Who We Are
Our website address is https://sailingcoronado.com. This site is run by John and Anna as a personal, non-commercial blog to share our experiences and knowledge from cruising full-time aboard our sailboat, Coronado. We don’t sell anything here, and we don’t collect information from visitors ourselves — but a few of the services this site relies on do, as described below.
Comments
When you leave a comment on the site, we collect the information shown in the comment form — your name, email address, and website (if provided) — along with your IP address and browser user agent string, which WordPress automatically records to help detect spam. Comments are checked through an automated spam-detection service (Akismet, provided by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com).
An anonymized string created from your email address (called a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have an account there. You can review Gravatar’s privacy policy at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment is approved, your profile photo (if any is associated with your email via Gravatar) becomes publicly visible next to your comment.
Email Subscriptions
If you’d like to be notified by email whenever we publish a new post, you can subscribe using the “Subscribe” option on the site. This is the only situation where we’d have your email address. The subscription feature is provided by Jetpack, a service from Automattic — we don’t manage, store, or use your email address ourselves beyond what Jetpack handles automatically (new post notifications, and comment-reply notifications if you opt into those). Media
If you upload images to the site (for example, as part of a comment), avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the site can download and extract any location data from images on the site.
Cookies
If you leave a comment, you may opt in to having your name, email address, and website saved in a cookie for your convenience, so you don’t have to re-enter them the next time you comment. These cookies last for one year.
Embedded content — such as the Instagram posts on our homepage — may also set their own cookies. See Embedded Content below.
Embedded Content
Our homepage includes embedded posts from our Instagram account (images only, no text). Embedded content from Instagram behaves the same as if you had visited Instagram directly: Instagram (operated by Meta) may collect data about you, set cookies, and track your interaction with that content — especially if you’re logged into an Instagram or Meta account at the time. Who We Share Your Data With
We don’t sell, rent, or share visitor information with anyone for marketing purposes. Data may be shared with the following third parties strictly as part of running the site:
- Automattic / Jetpack (WordPress.com) — our hosting provider, which also powers comments, spam filtering, and the email subscription feature described above.
- Gravatar (also an Automattic service) — for displaying profile photos next to approved comments.
- Instagram / Meta — only if you interact with the embedded Instagram content on our homepage.
How Long We Retain Data
Comments and their associated metadata are retained indefinitely, so we can recognize and automatically approve follow-up comments from returning visitors instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
What Rights You Have Over Your Data
If you’ve left a comment on this site, you can ask us to erase it by contacting us at info@svcoronado.com. Some data may need to be retained for administrative, legal, or security purposes even after a deletion request.
If you subscribed to email notifications, you can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any email you receive.
